Shaolin Monks – Between Legend and Reality

It’s very hard to find someone who hasn’t heard of the Shaolin monks. Just ask, some will hasten to say “karate” and then they will correct themselves and remember that, actually, it’s kung fu. “Same thing, right?”, others will smile, “it’s about a good fight”, after which they will mention Bruce Lee and will give you examples of even newer films like “The Matrix“. (Remember Neo? His fighting techniques were “uploaded” from a computer directly into his brain.)

We continue the survey. The religion of these monks is a more difficult attempt: “Hm, a religion in Asia…” – some will say. “Something Japanese” – others will fail to guess. Some will guess it’s Chinese; but with a little help, will reply quickly, “yes, Buddhism, I am sure.”

And behold, slowly, the details of the lives of these legendary characters will charm with their spell any group fascinated by the mysterious warrior monks.

I will get you acquainted with this world, born in the temple on top of Shaoshi, Sacred Song Mountain, temple that took part of the name of the mountain, “Shao”, and the suffix “Lin”, which translates into the woods. Shao-lin Temple. With its renowned monks.

Our Every Night Sleep Descended from Heavens

I bet you know a lot about that fish with whiskers and sweet flesh, anointed with oils and spices, that sleeps its eternal sleep on your plate. Maybe because nutrition is largely a conscious and controlled decision.

Maybe you somehow started concerning yourself with your breathing, although this is not in your conscious care, because breathing is a natural action anyway. Meanwhile you’ve found out that inadequate breathing can induce stress in the body, and some techniques may reduce it or eliminate it. So you can do something before on your own initiative about the way you breathe it’s too late.

But I bet sleeping quality doesn’t concern you. After all, you have no power against it. It beats you anyway and whatever happens to you after you fall prey to it, you have to accept. If you have no idea about this, even better. But sleeping, even though sets you on autopilot mode, is a programming thing before and after waking up.

Studying about nutrition and breathing, or doing anything that captivates you, given this quite cramped life you live, maybe you stole some time from sleeping, from the only place that you could get resources to stay awake even longer. Find out why you shouldn’t do this…

Flying Reptiles, from History’s Depths until Today

Many huge birds lived on Earth. Some were so big that our perception can’t even begin to describe them. Can you imagine a bird with a wingspan as large as a soccer goal?! Yes, it really existed!

Yet such a “feathered airplane” is not the largest flying creature that ever existed. You’re probably asking yourself: If not a bird, then what?! Well, the answer is amazing:

A flying reptile!

Flying reptiles? Are there such things?! Reptiles aren’t just crawlers that everyone is afraid of. Now, I’m not talking about flying iguanas, but more so about pterosaurs. That’s what reptiles that dominated the skies of Triassic were called, that was until the end of Cretaceous. Pterosaurs could be seen above the ground hundreds of millions of years ago. However, they seem to have totally disappeared 66 million years ago.

Isn’t it true that when someone says the word fly, the first thing you think about is birds, then airplanes, but never reptiles? And yet, the first flying vertebrates were not birds, but rather reptiles. Their wings were fibrous membranes with which they could move without touching the ground. But you can make up your own mind about how much they resemble lizards and today’s birds, especially after I introduce you to a few species that might leave you speechless.
