James Bond Island (and Other Exotic Stories)

Some places inspire in you all kinds of stories. When you find out about them, you feel like they’ve been there from the time when no man set foot on them yet. They were whispered by the wind that blows between the rocks, until some old man with a long tongue heard them and passed them on.

For example, have you ever heard of Khao Phing Kan? What about Ko Tapu? These are some places in Thailand, but you will surely have already forgotten their names by the time you read this line all through.

Let me tell you the story, and by the end of it you’ll want to go there. Or at least you’ll have a story to pass on for yourself.

ENIAC

Once upon a time, in a different spatial-temporal universe, a computer was as big as a building. The famous ENIAC, the very first digitally programmable computer, had 30 m in length and 27 tons in weight. It consumed 160 KW 1)Techonomics: The Theory of Industrial Evolution” by H. Lee Martin, book published in CRC Press in 2006. If you think that’s a pretty much high energy consumption, just imagine what it was like in 1946, when the production of electric energy was incomparably much lower than it is nowadays. Joke or no joke, it is said that the citizens of Philadelphia knew, in the evening, when the Giant Brain (as they called it) was on, because their light bulbs would become less bright 2)Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper: How Innovation Keeps Proving the Catastrophists Wrong” by Robert Bryce, book published in PublicAffairs in 2014. And to think all these calculations can now be done by your mobile phone in a blink of an eye.

Since then, the computers have considerably reduced in size. However, if you think about it a little, the majority of them are still too big. The reason for this is the popular standard ATX, launched by Intel in 1995, which, even two decades later, is still in the game. Among other aspects, this standard establishes the dimensions of the motherboard. When you intend on building a case, you can’t just do it whatever size you want, but it has to fit the motherboard. And, as long as ATX still enjoys its success, the majority of the computers are relatively big in size, as you well know.

However, the pressure for miniaturizing is constantly growing. Initially, the cases were “full-tower”. Then, they got smaller – but not miraculously small – to “mid-tower” and “mini-tower”. Then, some smaller cases made their appearance, with different standards for the motherboards, for example the “micro-tower”. Even if the difference in size is still obvious, nonetheless, you have to allocate them a considerable space.

But are there any better solutions? Let’s find out!

8 Major Benefits for Your Health When You Love (Depending How!)

Like anyone else, you want to be as healthy as possible. You read a little something; you find out about something else, and you try to do only what’s best for you.

You know that processed food is full of additives. You tell yourself that is best to avoid it. Just when you have switched your diet to vegetables and simple, basic products, you hear them say it’s best to buy their bio version. Not that you wouldn’t want to, but you have some existential questions when it comes to the price.

And you also found out that exercise is good for your health. Not just moving your butt out of the car to the office, but a real, actual workout. But, when do you have time to go to the gym? You barely manage to scroll all the way down to your Facebook timeline!

What would you say if I told you that there is actually something you can do to improve your health, something that costs you nothing, that doesn’t take you much time, and that it’s actually quite nice? Here is a little magic lesson…

7 Essential Ideas for Adolescents (Including My Daughter)

Every human being can be modelled. Just like play dough. The exterior pressures lead to transformations. But they have to be given the “green light” on behalf of the interior. This doesn’t always happen consciously, but it would be better this way. That’s when you take over the reins.

Every age is important in its way, but adolescence is essential for designing your future. Life has taught me that you should write down your ideas when they come to you, before the fly away. So, I’m writing them now – particularly that you might find them of good use.

If you are now living your magical years of adolescence, I am aware that you don’t like “to be told” what to do. (Who does?!) But I would be glad if you thought about what I have to say, to filter my ideas through your reasoning. You can say that I’m right, or you can say that I’m wrong. (Yes, you can!)

If you left adolescence behind… Did you really?! Adolescence is somehow forever present throughout our life, be it only in a small proportion. But it’s enough to enliven the adolescent within you. Or maybe you have adolescents around you…

Robert Campbell – What It Truly Means to Keep Your Word

When is the last time you gave your word and didn’t keep it? I know, your intentions were good, but something came up, etc.

My father had his principle:

When you say something, make it happen.

And so he did. It stuck in my mind and I’ve been trying to apply it ever since. There are many times when others expected me to make a promise, which I never did or promised less than expected – because that much I was sure to be able to keep. Usually, this approach of mine was not understood. Even though I did more than I had promised. But I continue to believe in my principle.

I’m fascinated by every story about people who keep their word. Just like the one I’m about to tell you. It’s an astonishing lesson to remember every time you make a promise.
